Members of ERA attended several events in Australia in 2014. The highlight was participating in a November meeting – the Scienific and Technical Advisory Panel workshop on agroecosystem resilience in Manly.
Led off by Ms. Monique Barbut, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the meeting included discussions at a high level, involving luminaries like:
• Victor Castillo (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification)
• Charles Besançon (Convention on Biological Diversity)
• Korinna von Teichman (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change)
Led by Annette Cowlie (chair of STAP), Deborah O’Connell (CSIRO), and Nicky Grigg (CSIRO), there was an amazing group of people. Brian Walker and Nick Abel of the Resilience Alliance were there as was USDA’s Jeff Herrick (also wearing several other hats), Paul Ryan of the Australian Resilience Centre, Lennart Olsson of Lund U, Brian Child of STAP (based in Zimbabwe), Leonie Pearson (U Canberra), Lindsay Stringer (Leeds U), Arieflla Helfgott (U Oxford) and many others.
Several of us are working on a paper based on this conference. The leadership team took all of our discussions and produced a terrific interim report on what resilience really means to people working in agroecosystems. Stay tuned for further progress!
